Picture one

This first picture narrates aspects of Sadie’s obsession with Star Wars and how he places this obsession within his life. To begin, there are several elements within the frame whose individual meanings can be conflicting as they are subject to personal interpretation, meaning they are multifaceted. Firstly, the juxtaposition of the Star Wars character and the city is symbolic of fiction versus reality. This commnicates that Sadie is stuck between two worlds- that of fiction and that of reality. This juxtaposition is also emphasised with the use of water to separate the two elemets of the picture- water also being symbolic of neutrality is important to emblemise that Sadie is not siding with any of the elements, but rather is torn by them. On the other hand, the framing of the character (storm trooper) being positioned below the city acts as though the city is over powering him. This embodies the fact that reality is stronger and more prevalent (to most people) than fiction is. The use of juxtaposition is an extremely powerful tool used to provoke emotion from the audience, for example, the Tower of Babel (Pieter Bruegel). The juxtaposition of the incomplete tower face and the constructed tower face creates a fractured beauty. The colour blue is used to be symbolic of Obi Wan Kenobi’s light saber, which is blue. This draws to the setting of the image, which is drawn from elements of fantasy. The bluish dull monotones represents the dreariness of real life. This again draws to the setting which is a bleak representation of real life. Further, the dull colour is representational of the internal battle Sadie is having with himself. The use of dull colour and grading to represent an aspect of life is common in film. One example is the dull colour grading used throughout Fight Club represents the harshness of capitalism. The use of wide shot allows for a lot of detail to be seen in the picture. This is a tool that allows audiences to relate to aspects, such as they are able to recognise the City. Further, The business of the frame is to show Sadie’s overwhelmed state and how occupied his mind is. This is used in many films to symbolise how the protagonist may be feeling mentally- ie. Batman. Although the Star War’s character is not on a building in this image, the fact he is near a ledge draws symmetry to the character of Batman.

Picture two

The tight framing on the character is used to intensify the focus and draw the audience’s eyes to him. IN turn this emphasies his importance in the story. Further, The low angle shot is a technique used to exude his power, perhaps over the audience. The use of low angle shots are abundant in films such as Blade Runner, to show the power of a character. The use of the direct eye line between the camera lens and the helmet helps to achieve this. The low angle shot is also symbolic of Star Wars’ power over Sadie- his obsession has overcome him in some sense. The pendant around the character’s neck has two functions. One, is it represents Star Wars as it is the symbol is of the Rebel Alliance- the force which is fighting the empire to restore peace to the republic. Two, it positioned near the heart drawing to the love and devotion Sadie has for Star Wars. The symbol is centre frame which highlights its importance and perhaps suggests to the audience it may be something to think about. The colours are bright which indicates to the audience that this is unlike the previous shot where the character seemed almost defeated, but rather he is powerful and regenerated. It sets a mood to the story, which is strong, fervent and passionate. Further the blank background specifies that nothing else is of importance and that the character should demand all attention.

Picture three

The third image is very plain and quite empty. The darkness and black background is symbolic of the Dark Force- an element of Star Wars. Further, the use of darkness brings emphasis to the center of the frame where the image is. The blue florescent light, is not only representational of the light saber, but embodies the idea of the light in the dark. The light force fighting through a scene consumed by darkness. This symbolises that there is goodness in mankind. The use of the mask, again not only represents Star Wars but is a symbolic emblem that we cannot always see clearly and that people sometimes mask themselves, but the light beside it ensures that in the end we will find the integrity of humanity and that good will triumph over evil- again leading to the fact that the Republic defeats the Empire (death star). The use of lighting is also important as it hides half of the face, allowing audience members to place their own face in its place, drawing personally to them. The framing is deliberately ambiguous, what I mean by that is that because it is black it is not necessarily obvious where the image starts. This ambiguity is symbolic of Sadie’s relationship with Star Wars- is it obsession? Is it more than that. I love this image because it’s plainness speaks to audiences because it allows them to take away from this image whatever they like, it is subject to their own interpretations. I think this element of ambiguity is extremely important and powerful in film as the viewer can relate their own life into it and therefore extract a personal meaning from the visualisation. When this connection occurs a film instantly becomes more thriving. (seriously though, i cant believe i took that photo- im in the wrong career path! too good kris)

I may never be able to soar over the planet of Naboo or fly across GOtham city. Until recently i thought I would fly a plane to be as close to those i admire as i can. But i realise, deep down inside, i want to fly because, like those i admire, i want to become a protector of my world.  And it is a long shot, a hard road and a lengthy process, but i will make.  Because I will be hero that our world deserves, and the one it needs right now… I will be a silent guardian, a watchful protector… and perhaps even one day a Dark Knight…”

mum invited our cousins round and Abby who is only 3 turned on her little brother’s rocking chair which subsiquantly has additional lullabys, supposed to help babies sleep. My initial reaction was to turn the toy off but zeidy grabbed my hand just as i reached for the switch.  Apparently when a child is listening to crap it is ok!

Besides feeling ill from eating too much food i still chatted away with the family. My zeidy and mum’s sister, miriam interrogated me our my plans for the future. Uncle David insisted i become a doctor like him. Not likely- but i flattered him by saying i would consider it.  I thought announcing my ideas of piloting and space cadeting and vigilantism would freak them out

The conversation bored me, but my cousins were annoying me cause they were all making a huge amount of noise, i just wanted to go to sleep.  That is when i realised i was a 15 year old turning 85 so i joined them just to strip my wrinkles and regain youth.  I played my Star Wars monopoly with leah, dovi and simi. Leah kept quizzing me on maths cause zaideh had just spent an hour tutoring her.  I seriously considered bonking her over the head to shut her up. Simi and dovi meanwhile pretended to be chantors singing at the top of their lungs ‘havah na gi lah, he he he, ishmael ash kidishanu vizi vanuh…’ they just went on. I laughed a little, it was too painful not to. Leah suddenly pulled my hair, i pinched back, she wasnt going to get away with bullying.  This is me looking at it in hindsight- she totally got away with it.

zaideh called all the children round and we sat listening. he told us the story of the exodos, of shifra and miriam who saved moses by sending him down the nile. he recconted the story of passover, of how moses unleashed 10 horrible plagues on the egyptians, as they refused to free the hebrews from slavery. he said hashem told the hebrews to mark their doors with lamb’s blood as hashem promised not to kill the 1st born boys of the houses marked with blood. Sure enough hashem stuck to his word. I like this story it reinsured that the good guys get there break… wait, was that even the point?

batman out

i have decided to construct a space ship myself. how i will go about this i am undecided. I will need the following-

-  aerodynamic body

- fire power

- a droid (like r2d2) to fix the plane when it needs repairing whilst in flight

- machine guns

- light saver rays

- light year that will allow me to travel faster than light

- ejectable seats

- armour sheild (makes the spaceship impenetrable)

- and obviously other technical bits that will help me get to space in the first place

It seems as though there is a multitude of jobs that amalgamate under ‘airforce’ and it seems to broad a term.  I really want to be a pilot. be in a career line that people’s jaws would drop and immediately know i was one of the best pilots in the world when i told them what i did. But airforce sounds too armyish and sensorshipish and governmentish for me.

i found this other site for ‘learning to fly’.  I mean that would be handy but it seems as though it is available for just anyone. plus the planes look shite! bahhaha i even found this ‘step-to-step-learn-to-fly’ manual on the net. wtf is going on with the world!

i re-typed in google ‘how to become a fighter jet pilot’ instead of ordinary ‘pilot’ and similar things came up except this time they all had the words ‘defence job’ or ‘army’ or ‘navy’ or ‘marine’.  those words really put me off cuz they are so related to the government.  but that seems the way to go apparently.  I dont mind marines.  they seem cooler cuz they are specialised

the thing is i have concluded about me and batman. Okay, first of all Batman is never seen with a sidekick or any ‘friend figure’ (other than alf) uptil Robin ruined the entire saga and i, like Batman havnt many friends.  we are a one man wagon- live in ourselves- dont need friends- mulit personas- kinda dudes.  Another coincidence is we both lack a father.  oh! oh! we both like black (my blog background HELLO).  WE have incredibly emasculating sexy voices (woah, woah! i did not mean that how it sounded.  I am merely agrandising my own vocal stylings by comparing them to Batman- NO i do NOT find Batman sexy!).  WE both like the night.  we both want revenge against those who seek injustice.  we want to fight those who pray on the weak. basically we are the same person.

One thing though.  If i were Batman i would probably not be so forgiving of Gotham each time they screw me over.  But then i thought about that… Batman explains that “he’s the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now…and so we’ll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he’s not a hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector…a dark knight”

that last sentence of the entire film encapsulates what Batman is.  He is the anit hero that performs the role that needs to be filled.  Sometimes he needs to be the bad guy so Gotham can sleep easier at night.  He is a dark knight becuase he is an anti-hero, he is both black and white.  and i think that is the best kind of hero there is. the one that is more human than all the rest.

I think that is why i really admire Batman because he gives me hope that anyone, with a past or who is just an ordinary guy can make a difference.  I love this quote “yesterday i struggled.  TOday i dare to win”
